Binding Basics

Learn the basics of putting a French fold binding on your quilt to finish off that masterpiece you have worked so hard on! You will learn how to calculate the amount of fabric needed, how to attach it to the quilt and hand sewing it to the back for a beautifully finished look. Bias bindings used for curved edges will also be discussed.

English Paper Piecing

We will be learning the art of English Paper Piecing using hexagons in this class. It is a relaxing and rewarding hand piecing technique that you can take with you to appointments, your kid’s sports practices, anywhere that you have to wait, or in the car on long trips (as a passenger of course)! You will learn some great tips for cutting down on prep time, and the best stitch to sew your hexagons together. If there is enough interest, we will turn this into a monthly club and learn a new pattern and other techniques each month.

Another one of those quilts you can make using scraps! Pick your favorite color combination. This pattern uses the newest Deb tucker ruler , the “Split Rects”. And yes, the blocks are oversized and trimmed down to the exact sizes to help in matching up those points. All level quilters will enjoy making this pattern!

Such a neat effect with this pattern! It uses five fabrics – a dark and medium of one color and a dark and medium of a second color, then one light background. Using the “V” Block and Tucker Trimmer rulers, you will make 2 types of blocks with color placement creating a secondary design. These rulers make more than one size block, as will be seen in class, for the different size quilts. NO templates, NO paper piecing as commonly used when making these 8-Pointed star blocks. This pattern has 3 size options. Everyone makes the same number of blocks; just different finished sized.

This quilt uses blocks whose names depict aspects of the Savior’s life. For example, Sister’s Choice refers to the story of Mary and Martha, Carpenter’s Square represents His childhood, Beacon Light refers to the Light of the World, etc… Each class will be comprised of reading quotes and talking about that aspect of His life and then learning how to make the block. Most months there will be 2 blocks to learn (18 blocks plus finishing by January 2014). New Orleans Puzzle

The way this quilt goes together is certain to have you “puzzled”, but you will quickly find that it is really very easy and the end result is a remarkable finished quilt. Finishing at approximately 45” diameter, it will be the perfect table topper or wall treatment. This could easily have the center cut out and be the centerpiece of your umbrella table for outdoor entertaining or a tree skirt for the holidays. Pattern provided in class.

North Star

This is another Deb Tucker ruler and pattern. This uses the “Spotlight” ruler to make 3 different star sizes. This ruler can also be used to make that maple leaf pattern that is so cool! Ornament/Snowflake Tree Skirt

This class will focus on a completely new median for making a quilt. Since it is Christmas in July, we will be making a Christmas tree skirt, but the fun will be in how we get it done. You will pick out simple plain fabric either light, dark or both, (solids, tone on tones, batiks, work best), then you are going to get creative with some Paintstiks, stencils and brushes. Sew, You Want to be a Quilter!

For those just beginning to quilt or need a refresher on some basics, we will help choose your fabrics, threads, notions, proper rotary cutting, and seam allowances. In this class you will learn basic block piecing that can be carried over into other projects. Since this is the short version of 4 weeks only, we will only make 12 blocks. You need to know how to work your sewing machine (REQUIRED) which includes winding bobbins, rethreading, changing stitch length and width (if needed) for specific blocks. BE PREPARED TO LEARN A LOT IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. Homework involved.
