Here is a great two color quilt for you to make!

Cincinnati, Ohhhh

Quilt Size -  73" x 85"
Block size - 11 1/2" finished 

Fabric Requirements

Fabric #1 - 2 1/4 yds.
Fabric #2 - 2 1/4 yds.
1st Border - 1/2 yd.
2nd Border - 1 1/2 yds.
Backing - 5 1/8 yds.
Binding - 5/8 yds,

BEST PRESS FABRICS #1 & #2 BEFORE CUTTING!  (You can purchase a 16 oz. spray bottle of Best Press at our shop and refill it on the 2nd Friday of each month for $5!)

Instructions

 1/4" seam allowance

1.     Fabric #1:  Cut (8) strips 10" x wof (width of fabric - selvage to selvage).  Sub-cut into (30) 10"   squares. 
Repeat for Fabric #2.
 




2.     Layer a  Fabric #1 square, right sides together, on a Fabric #2 square.  Press together.  Pin around all edges.  Flat flower head pins are the best to use as you can lay your ruler on them.







 3.     Make a mark 2" from a corner along one side.
Repeat on opposite side

4.     Sew  a seam, starting at the 2" mark and across the square.  Repeat on opposite side.
Sew all the way down the two other sides.  You now have a square with all four sides sewn.  Two of the sides will be sewn completely and two will have a 2" opening at opposite corners.

5.     Cut your unit in half diagonally, through the stitched corners.

6.     Cut each triangle half as illustrated,
2" in from edges.

7.     Each triangle will yield these pieces.

8.     Layout pieces as illustrated.

9.     Sew pieces into diagonal rows.

10.     Sew rows together to form a block.  Your block will have uneven edges.

11.     Square block to 12", unfinished.  You may square it smaller if you choose, but why waste fabric?

12.  You can now choose to set your blocks to form a square where the blocks meet,   OR

Set them so the opposite fabrics meet.


13.  Cut your 1st border 2 1/2" wide.  I used the blue fabric.

14.  Cut your 2nd border 6 1/2" wide.  For this I used the yellow.

Starching your fabrics first is a MUST with this block, as you are working with bias edges.  I use Best Press because it gives it a good finish and leaves no residue.

Scant 1/4" Seams

 

Are you having trouble getting those scant 1/4" seams?  Yes, a quilter's foot for  your machine is great, but can be expensive.  I have tried using painter's tape, masking tape, sticky notes (stacked up) and mole skin. Nothing was satisfactory to me.  The tapes came off too easily (when I didn't want them to), the grandkids had too much fun with the sticky notes and the mole skin wouldn't come off!  :-/

One of our customers told me of this neat trick.

The only thing you need is a lined index card and a sewing machine that the needle will change positions.

Line up the side of the presser foot with a line on the index card.  Now, start sewing.  Move your needle position so it is just barely to the right of the line.  Wah La! You  now have sewn a scant 1/4".  Just make sure you record exactly which position you needle is in for future use. 

Fast & Easy Pillowcase

Fabric Requirements
28" x wof* for main body
3" x wof* for accent piece
10" x wof* for cuff
 *(width of fabric)

Instructions

 

 Press all pieces.

                                       

 Press accent strip in half lengthwise.

 

Lay cuff out, right side up.  Mark center along top raw edge. 

(Yellow Flower Head pin marks the center.)

Mark center raw edge of folded accent strip.

Match center of accent strip and center of cuff.

Pin from center out.  (Your selvages edges will not necessarily match up.)

Place main body on top of accent strip, right side down.

Match center of main body and center of accent and cuff.

Pin from center out.

 

 

Taking hold of bottom of main body,

lift up toward pinned raw edges.

Fold bottom up until about 2" from top.  

 

Take the fold of main body up to about 2" from top.

Now roll up the bottom of the main body toward the top;

stopping where the rest of the main body is folded to.

 

You are now going to make a tube by folding the bottom of the cuff up over everything

and pinning it to the top raw edges.  

Sew along raw edge, using a 1/2" seam.

HERE COMES THE FUN PART!

Grab hold of one corner of the main body

from inside the tube. 

Slowly pull it out, turning the cuff right side out as you do so. 

 

Press the inside of the pillowcase cuff,

making sure you press it all the way out.

Press the right side of the pillowcase cuff,

again making sure you press it all the way out. 

The accent strip will be pressed toward the main body, not the cuff.

 

Fold the pillowcase in half, lengthwise, right sides together.  Now is the time to square off those selvage edges.  Square up the bottom of the pillowcase also.

Sew down the side of the pillowcase.

You can use a straight stitch then zigzag the raw edges, do a French seam or serge this step and the next.  Sew across the bottom of the pillowcase - FROM THE SEAM TO THE FOLD

(this makes sure you don't get a pucker in it).

Turn right side out and press!  You now have a great pillowcase. 

I first started making these for my boys when they were younger.  They had one for every month.

Jelly Race

On Friday, November 1, we held our second "Jelly Race".  We had a lot of fun and laughs.



First, the ladies opened up their jelly rolls and mixed them up in a bag.  Taking them out, one by one, they sewed them end to end to make a strip 1600 inches long.











Then they took both ends and sewed them together, lengthwise, to make a 800 inch strip.  The trick was:  NOT to get a twist in the strips at the fold end.  This frustrated a lot of them!

Whenever I called out, everyone had to immediately stop what they were doing and listen to me.  During these STOP times, we played "QUILT" (BINGO) and ran around the store with rotary cutters (no blades in them).













We ate dinner, played "QUILT", tossed chips into a trash bin and played "QUILT".

Shop Hop Frenzy

Well,  this past week has been very eventful!  On Tuesday morning someone broke into the shop.  Nothing was taken, just some damage to the doors.  We are so grateful to all our wonderful customers and their support.

Shop Hop started on Wednesday and ran through Saturday.  Over 600 people came through our shop during that time.  Everyone received a "cupcake" with candle as they entered the store.  We had fun playing a floor game and having a "Frog Toss".  Silly Birthday Cake hats were the attire for the employees.  Prizes were given, passports stamped and cookies and punch eaten.  The Birthday Bash block was handed out to anyone who wanted it.  The Birthday Bash Banner kit was available for purchase for those who wanted to hang a quilt block for different events during the coming months. There are a few of the banner kits still available.  We hope that everyone had a great time.  We sure did!

Congratulations to Pat Horrocks of West Valley City.  She won the grand prize of a Baby Lock Symphony Sewing Machine!  Arnell Wamsley (West Jordan) and Tamara Smith (Riverton) were the recipients of the $50 Gift Certificates.  Deb Niven was the lucky winner of the store's "Tisket, Tasket" quilt kit.  Congratulations to all!

Girl's Night Out!

Thanks to all our wonderful customer who came to our "Girls Night Out" on October 5th.  We had a great time and hope that you did too!  

Since we have a small classroom,  those who were waiting to make the "Snowflake" craft played "QUILT".  Our version of BINGO.  All who won received a set of fabric quilt labels or a honey bee thread conditioner.  Some of the ladies had 2 or 3 "QUILT" cards to try and win!  A special thanks to Margo, who took over the "calling" for a while. 

The "Snowflakes" were a great success!  The project strips were pre-cut so all that needed to be done was the weaving and the gluing.  Linda, Kathy, Amber and Shauna helped in the instruction and answered any questions.  I didn't hear of any burnt fingers from the glue (we used lo-temp glue guns) or fingers pricked from the scissors, but there was a lot of laughter and fun going on.

 
Everyone seemed to enjoy taking home a "Snowflake" ornament and the extra kits they purchased.  We still have some kits left if you are interested in purchasing them.  These are great ornaments to hang on your Christmas tree or to give as neighbor/friend gifts.

In addition to the games and the craft, we had snacks and treats for everyone. 

Fat Quarters were also on sale (we had stacks of them on the counter to hold for customers).  Capture Bags was there to video the event.  We will let you know when you can view it on youtube.
