"FROG" Blog

"HOP" to it and pull out those scraps to make these cute "FROG" blocks!

They can be made in three different sizes and can be put in to a quilt together or you can make just one size and use it over and over again.  You may use all the same backgrounds or a different one for each block.  You are only limited by your imagination!

Cutting
6" - (9") - [12"]
Background - three - 2 3/4" (3 1/4") [4"] squares - A
                      two - 2" (2 3/4") [3 1/2"] squares - C
                      four - 2" (2 3/4") [3 1/2"] squares - D
                      one 2" x 3 1/2" (2 3/4" x 5") [3 1/2" x 6 1/2"] rectangle - F
Colored fabric - three 2 3/4" (3 1/4") [4"] squares - B
                      one - 3 1/2" x 5" (5" x 7 1/4") [6 1/2" x 9 1/2"] rectangle - E

Construction of block

Draw a line diagonally across the wrong side of all A squares.

Lay A on top of B, right sides together.  Sew 1/4" on both sides of line.

Cut on line and press four HST's to the colored side and two HST's to the background.
Square to 2" (2 3/4") [3 1/2"].

Sew a HST, that has pressed toward the color, to a C square.

Sew two HST, that have been pressed opposite directions together.

Sew the two units together.  Repeat, mirror image, for the opposite side.

These will form the front flippers and the back legs for each side of the frog.

Draw a line diagonally across wrong side of all squares.  Position two D squares on two opposite corners of E.  Sew on the line, trim 1/4" away from line and press out toward background.

Repeat with remaining D squares on the two other corners of E to form frog body.

Sew the F rectangle to one end of unit.

Sew the leg units to the sides of the body.

Machine or hand applique' eyes on.

The 12" frog has eyes fussy-cut out of polka dot fabric.  Part of the background was left on to help form the eyes.

The 9" frog's eyes were cut out of some fun bubble fabric.  They were also fussy-cut and it was fun to position his eyes different directions!

This little 6" frog just needed eyes out of a sugar dot.

What a great way to use up some of those scraps!
I hope you enjoy creating your own "Pond" with these great Frog Blocks!

Happy Quilting!

Carolyn
